The most substantial of these games is Woodys Roundup, a sandbox-style Western that takes several hours to complete. You can re-play the intro sequence (Train Rescue), watch the cutscenes youve unlocked (Toy Story Theater), poke around in Als Toy Barn, or select from Toy Story 3s various sub-games. The map screen is a board game, and there you can choose from a variety of options. The game ahead, however, is where the problems lie. By the time you get to the end of this brief sequence, its hard not to be excited for the game ahead. This involves some demanding platforming, and even some third-person shooting (be sure to take cover!). Once you catch the train, you jump aboard in a cutscene, and proceed to fight your way to the front. Playing as Woody and riding Bullseye, you have to chase after a train to rescue some kidnapped orphans, avoiding various obstacles. Youre dropped into the middle of a fantasy sequence from the original Toy Story. Theres nothing wrong with that, but theres nothing to go crazy about, either.
But for the most part, Toy Story 3 is just like every licensed kids game: a series of easy and mundane tasks that keep children occupied for a few hours, but dont serve much of a purpose beyond that. And yes, there are some moments of sheer genius here.
True, Toy Story 3 stands head and shoulders above most other movie games.
Were here to be that guy: this game is highly, highly overrated. We may outgrow our toys, but we'll never outgrow Toy Story. If the games Metacritic page is any indication, Avalanche Softwares Toy Story 3 has been quite a hit with critics and fans alike. From the beautiful imagery, to the powerful script, this movie didn't miss a beat. Overall, Toy Story 3 was a fantastic farewell to Andy's story. Also, don't expect me to say much about Pixar's CGI, it speaks for itself. Was there any bad voice acting? In my opinion, no. The two have such a great chemistry, and they're merely voice acting! Back in Toy Story 2, I found Jessie to be relatively annoying, but here, I started taking a liking to her. Michael Keaton does a great job as Ken, and Jodi Benson does fantastic as the mood swinging Barbie stuck in the 80's. He makes the character seem like an innocent, old timer, but deep down has a black heart. For me though, Ned Beatty stole the show as Lotso. The original cast has returned to provide their voice work, and it's almost like they never missed a beat after so many years. It's basically Pixar saying goodbye and thanks for all the love. When you learn of why Lotso runs the daycare like a dictatorship, you feel a sense of abandonment, but it doesn't give you the sense of he's not bad, just misunderstood. When Woody is suddenly in the hands of a new child who plays with her toys in a nice way, it gives you a sense of joy that somebody cares just as much as Andy does. The movie itself is not so much an emotional roller coaster, but it hits you hard. One of the funniest parts of this movie is the dialogue Barbie and Ken share, making for hilarious jabs at the toylines. It's a prison break movie all around, but with toys! Even though there is a lot of humor for the kids, there's still room for a serious storyline. After a nightmarish first day, Woody helps to bust his friends out so they can get back to Andy's and stay in the attic. At the daycare, the toys meet Lotso-hugs, a magenta colored huggable bear who smells like strawberries. While the toys are content with being donated to a daycare center, Woody refuses to accept the fact that Andy is moving on, and wants to go back. Many of his toys have been sold off, or donated, so only Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, Rex, Hamm, and the Potato Heads are left. He's not playing with his toys anymore, since he's outgrown them. That exception is Toy Story 3, a movie that outdoes its predecessor (Toy Story 2) and concludes Andy's story so beautifully.Īndy's getting older now, and is on his way to College. Think about it for a second, how many movies with a third sequel were just as successful as their first? Not many, huh? Well, occasionally, you do find that one exception.
